April-May 2012 Post-Alliance Meeting
Dear fellow Alliance members,
The Alliance held a successful member meeting April 19-20 in Atlanta with 53 members participating, which is the highest level of participation in recent Alliance meeting history. Twenty-six contractor members and 27 manufacturer, distributor or supplier members attended making for an evenly balanced meeting. We were pleased to see so many familiar faces and a few new faces.
As we plan for future Alliance meetings, we want to make sure the meetings are productive and provide value and the locations and accommodations continue to meet your standards. We ask that you please take a few minutes to provide your feedback by completing a brief survey. Click here to take the quick attendee survey.
The meeting was extremely positive; not only was the meeting content full and productive, but the social events provided exclusive networking opportunities, as well. Sincere gratitude and appreciation go to Melvin and Steven Kruger and Bennett and Gayle Hutchison. Melvin and Steven were instrumental in securing our keynote speakers Chris Clark, president and CEO of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and Dr. R. Kirby Godsey, chancellor of Mercer University. Bennett and Gayle hosted a formal dinner at The Cherokee Town Club Thursday and opened their home for a casual evening of southern hospitality and "finger-licking-good" barbecue on Friday. Three new scholarships were awarded: Carter Hruby (Fred Good Scholarship), Jonathan Poore (Dan Cohen Scholarship) and Kara Sosinski.
The Alliance Finance and Financial Development Committee and the board of trustees approved two funding requests: $33,000 for a new asphalt fumes (emissions) quantitative risk analysis and $100,000 to update the five top-selling roof application training program (RATP) modules: administrator and trainers program, overview of low-slope roofing, overview of steep-slope roofing, tear-off, setup and equipmentlow slope roofing, and tear-off, setup and equipmentsteep-slope roofing. The Alliance will receive 25 percent of the product revenue until it has recovered its investment. The funds will be disbursed as part of the Alliance's 2013-2014 budget. Vic Anthony, Alliance director of member development, reported he has 18 prospective member firms he has been recruiting. He will continue his efforts in promoting the Alliance as he conducts educational programs on behalf of GAF. He reported the companies he has been contacting are interested but are hesitant because of the price of membership. Vic will be working with staff to develop several payment options to offer. He said the new Alliance brochure is a great tool for sharing the Alliance story. (The Alliance brochure is on the Alliance website, click here to view the brochure or to request copies be sent to you for distribution to prospective firms in your area.) Vic encouraged Alliance members to contact him with any prospective companies they would like him to contact.
In addition to the written update on the Wall of Wind by Dr. Arindam Chowdhury, Alliance members in Atlanta had the opportunity to hear Rob Kornahrens report on his observations. Rob recently had visited the Wall of Wind facility and observed testing with wind speeds up to 157 miles per hour generated by the 12-fan Wall of Wind. Click here for Rob's photos of the testing.
The Alliance thanked Dane Bradford, Jim MacKimm and Bruce McCrory for their service on the board of trustees for the past four years. Their current terms expire May 31, 2012. The Alliance also took a moment for special recognition of Will Fort, thanking him for leading the Alliance this past year, serving tirelessly as president.
Rob Therrien, President

Before the meeting concluded, we had the special privilege of accepting a check by Josh and Sean Kelly on behalf of OMG Roofing Products. Josh and Sean presented President Fort and NRCA Executive Vice President Bill Good with a check in the amount of $12,250, which represents the proceeds received from the silent auction OMG Roofing Products held in their booth during the International Roofing Expo in Orlando, Fla. This contribution to the Alliance will go to Rebuilding Together to support its Heroes at Home program, which helps rehabilitate homes for veterans. President Fort thanked Mr. Kelly for OMG's generosity and continued support of the Alliance and NRCA. Click here for a photo of the check presentation.
There has been a great deal of momentum since the April 2011 meeting in Florida; the Alliance has implemented many of the action items resulting from the facilitated discussions held there. When Dr. Godsey addressed Alliance members in Atlanta, he said he admired the Alliance for choosing to take responsibility and help shape the future. We know there is a lot more work to be done. We need to continue to be imaginative, intelligent and bold! But we only can continue our efforts if members remain actively involved every step of the way. Together we can help the Alliance reach its full potential!
