Construction Management Schools Initiative
The Alliance Construction Management Schools Initiative Committee met July 13 during NRCA's Midyear Meetings in Chicago. The meeting proved productive.
Committee members reviewed a draft of the criteria for the 2017-18 Construction Managment Student Competition, specifically focusing on deadlines. The 2018 International Roofing Expo® (IRE), to be held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, will take place three weeks earlier than in 2017, so the competition deadlines must be adjusted accordingly.
Tupac De La Cruz, Roofing Solutions LLC, Prairieville, La., shared plans for the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, which will be the project for the competition. He also arranged a job-site visit for the students, and he and his team will spend time with the students after the oral presentations discussing some of the challenges they faced and answering any questions the students may have. De La Cruz and committee co-chair Kyle Thomas, Thomas Roofing Co. Inc., Mobile, Ala.,worked together to prepare project documents for the teams. Letters of invitation and project details were sent to schools by mid-August.
The 2018 competition will acknowledge more than one winning team. There will be awards for First Place, Second Place and Best Individual Student Presenter. Certificates of merit will be awarded to all non-winning finalist students.
We plan to introduce the teams at the Alliance Member Reception on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018, during IRE, giving you an opportunity to meet the students. After the introduction, teams will draw for their presentation order. We also encourage all members to support the competition by attending the oral presentations, which will take place Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, at 7:45 a.m. at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. If you can't stay for the entire program, plan to listen to one or two of the teams' presentations. We think you'll be impressed!
The committee also discussed a faculty research program. The committee has had several discussions to determine topics appropriate for faculty research. Professors Richard Burt, Ph.D, Professor and School Head, The McWhorter School of Building Science, Auburn University, Auburn;Mostafa Khattab, Ph.D., Professor and Department Head, Construction Management, Colorado State University, Fort Collins; and Robert Ries, Ph.D, Associate Professor and Director M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Building Construction, University of Florida, Gainesville volunteered to work collaboratively to survey NRCA and Alliance members asking them to identify key industry issues and/or problems. They recommended collecting this information in two ways:
- Outreach at 2018 IRE, including talking to board members at NRCA's board of directors meeting; speaking with
people in the NRCA/Alliance booths; walking the Expo floor and inviting randomly selected attendees back to the
Alliance booth for a brief survey; and possibly engaging attendees in our Alliance-member exhibitor lounges.
Attendees who agree to take the survey would be eligible for an iPad drawing. The winner would be announced at NRCA's
Industry Awards Ceremony the evening of Feb. 7.
- Following IRE, Burt, Khattab and Ries would contact randomly selected companies in each of their geographical regions and conduct a similar survey. They would then summarize the information collected and develop a list of potential topics for the committee's review.
Alliance Finance and Financial Development Committee
Our standing committee on finance met July 14 to review current financial reports and the May 31 Audited Financial Report, which now will go to the Alliance board of trustees for review.

Membership Development Update
With the three new firms we welcomed at the beginning of this update, membership stands at a total of 163 (114 contractors; 37 associates; five service providers; five individuals; and two supporting members) and $150,000 in new member revenue.
We have set a goal of generating $500,000 in new member revenue by May 31, 2018. This ambitious goal will require staff and leadership support, as well as personal visits.
We have a number of strong prospects to pursue, and the Member Development Team, consisting of Rob Therrien, Rod Petrick, Rob McNamara and Dane Bradford, are a real asset to our recruitment efforts. We also thank all Alliance members for your continued support. Our ability to fulfill the Alliance's mission statement rests solely with our members (existing and new), and your continued commitment and involvement will help us meet our goals!
Please let Bennett Judson, Alliance executive director, Bill Good, NRCA's senior advisor, or Alison LaValley, NRCA's vice president of strategic partnerships and development, know if you have relationships with any of these industry professionals to help us secure their involvement in the Alliance moving forward. Many of these prospects will be invited to our member reception and meeting during NRCA's Fall Meetings to introduce them to the great work the Alliance is undertaking:
- Advanced Industrial Roofing, Massillon, Ohio — Fred Horner
- C.I. Services, Mission Viejo, Calif. — Bill Baley
- Chase Restoration, Indianapolis — Chase Ledliker
- Crane Renovations Group, Anderson, S.C. — Gary Kerley
- Deer Park Roofing, Cincinnati — Nick Sabino
- F.A. Taylor & Sons, Baltimore — Dave Taylor

Since resurrecting the Alliance's Planned Giving Program in 2016 and developing a case for the endowment, we have secured $500,000 in bequests to the Alliance. Thank you to those who have remembered the Alliance in their estate plans; each gift will have a significant and lasting impact on our organization.
Alliance leaders have decided to create a Founding Donor recognition for all Alliance members who make a bequeathal of at least $50,000 by the end of 2017; you can direct your gift to any Alliance program and inspire the next generation of roofing industry leaders. Founding Donors will be invited to a special Donor Appreciation Dinner held in conjunction with the April Alliance meeting, profiled in Alliance publications and on social media, and receive a Founding Donor plaque and pin.
Planned giving is an excellent way to realize your philanthropic, estate and financial planning goals, and the Alliance makes it easy to participate. Specific information about becoming a Founding Donor will be mailed to all Alliance members in September. To learn more today, please contact Bill Good, NRCA's senior advisor, at (847) 276-1664 or firstname.lastname@example.org or Alison LaValley, NRCA's vice president of strategic partnerships and development, at (847) 493-7573 or email@example.com.
Before concluding, we'd like to take this opportunity to thank Bill Good, who officially retired as NRCA CEO on May 31, 2017. Bill was not only a dynamic leader of NRCA, but he was also instrumental in the development of The Alliance. He was part of the distinguished leadership team that shared the vision of the Alliance: bringing together all segments of the roofing industry to provide funding for industry research and educational programs, providing timely and forward-thinking industry responses to major economic and technological issues, and promoting professionalism.
Bill has always had a strong passion for the Alliance and has been a driving force behind the momentum it has achieved. He has been a true ambassador for the Alliance. He is not only well respected in the roofing industry but also in the association market, hospitality field and political arena.
At the April 2017 meetings, Alliance members approved an eleventh Melvin Kruger Endowed scholarship. This named scholarship, the William A. Good Scholarship, is a small token of our appreciation for Bill's many years of service, noteworthy contributions and devotion to the Alliance, NRCA and the roofing industry.
We wish Bill well in his retirement from full-time employment but are pleased he will continue to stay involved with the Alliance in our construction management initiative, fundraising efforts and partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities.
We're excited about the strong start to fiscal year 2017-18, and we look forward to your support and involvement to keep the momentum going. We need your continued attendance at meetings, participation on committees and input to make that happen. Feel free to contact Bennett Judson or Bill Good with your comments, questions and any prospective members who we can contact.
