President McNamara's Remarks
Yet another year our 19th! now almost in the books for The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress. And quite a year it's been. Like the 18 years before, our 2014-15 year culminated in our April member meeting where our board of trustees and members guided us in the funding of new and ongoing projects for the good of our industry's future. Thanks to all 80-some attendees who participated in a productive and enjoyable gathering in downtown San Francisco, attendance was fairly equally split between our supplier and contractor membership sectors.
By all accounts, our 19th fiscal year was a busy and successful one. The pace was set early as Immediate Former President Jim MacKimm lit the fuse and shot us out the canon following 2014's April member meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Thanks also to the efforts of our engaged membership, our task force and committee members immediately got to work during NRCA's Midyear Meetings in Chicago. NRCA's itinerary was unusually riddled with Alliance meetings throughout, including our Construction Management Schools Task Force, Construction Management Schools Student Competition Task Force, Fundraising Task Force, and our standard fare Finance and Financial Development Committee. There was a time when only our finance committee convened during Midyear Meetings. That time is no more.
Returning to a much chillier downtown Chicago in November, work continued during busy Fall Meetings when our task forces and committee members met once again along with our joint board of trustees and full Alliance member meeting. During this joint meeting, we received updates on projects under way, including our investment in RoofPoint™; the Bilingual America Latino Workforce Initiative; faculty curriculum study and integration; and student competition with construction management schools at Auburn University, Colorado State University and the University of Florida. We also held our first unique Shipper's Forum where we brought together manufacturing, distribution and contractor sectors to share experiences and means of mitigating the acute logistic challenges facing so many of roof system installations.
Finally, much of that work was capped off in February at the 2015 International Roofing Expo® with our student competition—great job by all and special congratulations to our winning team at Colorado State University. No doubt we couldn't have done it without all the help from our task force members, team mentors and judges. We also enjoyed an earlier meet and greet with our student teams during a well-attended Alliance reception and finally recognized some great field leaders through our recurring MVP awards program.
Word on the Alliance's contribution to our industry's future is anything but a well-kept secret. Throughout our fiscal year, membership development continued at a high pace as we added nine new members since June 1, 2014, and 14 since June 1, 2013. Our current Alliance membership stands at a whopping 145 members, thanks especially to the efforts of Rob Therrien, Bill Good and our newest Alliance evangelist, Preacher Rod ("can you feel it!?") Petrick. It was great seeing a good number of our newest members during our April meeting; your presence and participation is much appreciated.
Our April meeting continued this busy pace with direction set by our Finance and Financial Development Committee, Board of Trustees and, of course, Alliance members. Our finance committee members proposed budgets for our general fund and Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship fund while further providing guidance on overall funding of projects presented to the trustees later that day. Our board of trustees then successfully vetted six out of seven project proposals with the seventh, a future study of our industry, vetted by members following a presentation by the same futurist who prepared our earlier future study completed in 2005.
Highlights from the Alliance Member Meeting in San Francisco
After a full day of meetings, Alliance members enjoyed networking and mingling over cocktails on Thursday evening. Then, Friday evening provided another opportunity for members, spouses and guests to relax and unwind while enjoying a wine reception and dinner at One Market Restaurant. After finishing up more business Friday morning, Alliance members learned how to use the techniques and processes of elite military professionals to accelerate performance and win the battles of the business world. Operating budgets for the general Alliance fund and Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship fund (including $50,000 for student scholarships) were approved as presented. Click here for a copy of the approved operating budgets for 2015-16.
The Finance and Financial Development Committee set a maximum of $300,000 for new project funding. A total of $130,500 in project funding was approved:
$16,500 EnergyWise Update new
$80,000 Continued relationships with construction management schools new
$10,000 carried over from 2014-15/committed for ANSI canvassing
$24,000 carried over from 2014-15/committed for Bilingual America Training and Final Report

The board of trustees awarded 10 scholarship awards for the 2015-16 Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship program: Five renewals at $5,000 each went to Jaclyn Harris (Firestone Scholarship), Shoshanna Lee, Josiah Martin, Dannelly McKenzie and Kara Sosinski. Five new scholarships at $5,000 each were awarded to Brittany Beldon (second Firestone Scholarship), Christian Cole (Dan Cohen Scholarship), Ivy Rivas (Fred Good Scholarship), Jonah Mason and Adam Stackpole.
The board approved recommendations from the Alliance Fundraising Task Force to initiate a voluntary capital campaign to broaden support and secure philanthropic gifts "to support and further the Alliance mission." This voluntary "ask" is intended to be an ongoing effort with a concentrated marketing focus on fourth-quarter (year-end) giving and to resurrect the planned giving program. Staff is to research planned giving consultants who can help us set goals, define the audience and help develop promotional materials. Details for both initiatives will be shared in detail with Alliance members in the near future.
Membership participation is vital within the Alliance, and much of its strength comes from its broad base of supportive members. To further enrich this diverse group of industry professionals, the Alliance Fundraising Task Force proposed Alliance membership include the following new member categories, which were approved by the board of trustees and Alliance members in attendance:
- Service providers less than $10 million in annual sales $50,000
Service providers $10-$30 million in annual sales $75,000
Service providers over $30 million in annual sales 100,000
- Local distributors/suppliers less than $15 million in annual sales $50,000
Local distributors/suppliers $15-$30 million in annual sales $75,000
Local distributors/suppliers over $30 million in annual sales $100,000

Written updates on all current Alliance-funded projects were included in member notebooks (and online). At the meeting John Geary, chairman of the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing,™ gave a brief update. Following are a few highlights from Mr. Geary's update:
- In January 2015, the center signed a contract for new management services with Kellen Company, a full-service association management company; Shawn Swearingen is the new executive director.
- They are reaching out to current, past and potential members at industry shows to gauge interest and hear concerns.
- Develop focused, prioritized and actionable 90- and 180-day plans designed to achieve success and restore confidence in the need for and the viability of the center.
- Develop a member retention and recruitment plan with a clear value proposition for each member segment, including dues restructuring.
- Develop and successfully execute a RoofPoint marketing and standard development plan focused on making RoofPoint the standard for reroofing and to establish level designations within RoofPoint based on accreditation points.
Jim Barr, Bill Good and Bennett Judson manned an Alliance booth at the 51st Annual International Conference of Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) held April 22-25, 2015, at Texas A&M University in College Station.
Attending the conference were approximately 250 construction science educators and graduate students from throughout the U.S. and world who came to discuss emerging technologies' effects on construction management practice and education.
The purpose of having a booth at the conference was to gain more exposure for the Alliance and to be able to share our construction management initiatives with the faculty in attendance.
ASC is a professional, interdisciplinary association whose members seek to develop and advance construction education. The construction managers, architects, engineers and other professionals in other fields in the ASC believe that sharing ideas and knowledge inspires, guides and promotes excellence in construction curricula, teaching, research and service.
Officers and Trustees
As our year draws to a close, we wish to thank the following retiring trustees for their time and effort in serving: Scott Kawulok, B & M Roofing of Colorado Inc., Frederick; Tom Walker, ABC Supply, Beloit, Wis.; and Jeff Willis, Roofing Supply Group LLC, Dallas.
And, we welcome the new officers whose terms begin June 1: Ken Farrish, Atlas Roofing, president; James Patterson, CentiMark Corp., vice president (president for 2016-2017); and Jim Barr, Barr Roofing, secretary-treasurer. New trustees include Dane Bradford, Bradford Roof Management, Billings, Mont.; Rod Petrick, Ridgeworth Roofing Co. Inc., Frankfort, Ill.; Tom Saeli, Duro-Last Inc., Saginaw, Mich.; and Tom Walker, ABC Supply (serving a second full term).

As we plan for future Alliance meetings, we want to make sure the meetings continue to be productive and provide value and that the locations and accommodations continue to meet the standards of our members. In conclusion, we have lots to look forward to as we enter our 20-year mark under the leadership of Ken Farrish. As our industry continues to evolve in so many ways, the heart of our organization remains in our active participation and formation of the roofing industry's ever-changing landscape. Workforce development, changes in technology and logistic challenges are but a few examples. By working in partnership across all sectors, we will ensure a vibrant industry successfully providing the U.S. with protection from nature's elements for decades to come. And our member scale is at an all-time high with more anticipated growth this year. Thank you for your help this past year. Your dedication is making the Alliance a real industry lightening rod helping to illuminate our path forward.
