January 2018 member update

We hope your new year is off to a great start. The Alliance year is starting off strong, and what makes us strong is not only the financial support, but the time, talent and commitment of our members. We know you have very demanding roles as leaders in your companies, making your support of the Alliance even more valuable! Member engagement keeps the Alliance strong and allows it to move forward and have a positive effect on the roofing industry.

We'd like to acknowledge and thank NRCA CEO Reid Ribble and his wife, DeaNa, for their contribution to the Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship fund. Total pledges and receipts are at $1,347,708 — only $652,292 away from our $2 million goal. Click here to learn more about the Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program and how you can contribute.

Alliance — Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Partnership

We currently have two especially active task forces . First, our Ronald McDonald House Charities Task Force is working diligently to connect members with Ronald McDonald Houses in their areas. To date, 49 of 182 houses have been adopted and we have more in the works.

Our task force is finishing up loading the database with information regarding each house; developing sample documents and procedures and preparing asset management plans and budgets for the individual houses and a master schedule for roof replacements.

In addition to caring for the roofing needs, there are various ways our members and their employees can support the houses. The Springfield, Mass., Ronald McDonald House needed new or gently used winter clothing. Employees of OMG, Inc., Agawam, Mass., held a clothing drive in December 2017 and donated coats, scarves and hats. The families at the house were thrilled to receive these items.

We'd like to hear from you about the different ways your companies and employees are supporting your adopted houses.

Our Branding Task Force is steadily moving forward. It has a plan of action, finalizing a creative brief and working with a company regarding ideas for a new logo. The next step is to have a smaller subgroup from within the task force meet with NRCA's Communications and Marketing departments. The objective will be to share task force plans and the creative brief it developed, to see in which areas each department can offer assistance. This will help the task force determine which areas are better suited for an outside firm and get estimated costs.

The task force will present a detailed report to the Alliance board of trustees at their April meeting along with a request for estimated funding needed to proceed with the proposed work. Following the April Alliance meeting, subject to approval, the task force then would continue with the action items, getting an RFP out to marketing firms, reviewing proposals, selecting a firm(s) and launching the branding effort next fiscal year.

Construction Management Schools Initiative

We hope you'll plan to come watch our Construction Management Student Competition oral presentations taking place at the International Roofing Expo® (IRE) Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 8 - 10:30 a.m. at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, R05. Click here to view the four finalist teams presenting in New Orleans.

The teams will draw for their presentation times at the Alliance member reception Monday evening. They will give their oral presentations before a panel of judges, acting as the Audubon Aquarium owners, facility management and design team looking to assemble a team of craftsmen that can meet the demands of this difficult roofing project.

The successful team solution will be based on the team's understanding of the project; realistic construction schedule and man-loading financial proposal; written proposal; and presentation. The winning teams will be announced later Wednesday evening during the NRCA Industry Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception at 5 p.m. at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Great Hall AD. The first and second place teams will receive team trophies, a $5,000 L.B. Conway and a $2,500 scholarship (respectively) for their schools; individual awards; recognition in press releases sent to local and national media and roofing industry trade press; and acknowledgement in Professional Roofing magazine and on the Alliance website. This year, the judges also will select a Best Individual Presenter.

During their visit to the IRE, the teams will have the opportunity to go on a site visit of the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. We have scheduled appointments with some of our Alliance member exhibitors to meet with the students during expo hours. Thank you to ABC Supply, EagleView Technologies, Johns Manville, Karnak Corp., ROCKWOOL and SOPREMA.

Alliance Member Reception

Invitations to the Alliance member reception in New Orleans were sent out after the IRE. The reception is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 5, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, River Room. At the beginning of the reception, we'll introduce the competition teams and have them draw for their oral presentation times. Following this brief presentation, we'd like to encourage you to meet and welcome the students and faculty. If you didn't receive an invitation or have not yet responded, please let Bennett Judson or Jessica Priske know as soon as possible.

April Alliance Member Meeting

We're planning for a great meeting!

In addition to the business at hand, members will have opportunities to network and get to know each other at our Thursday evening reception, Friday afternoon group activity and Friday evening dinner.

Remember, our format has changed this year — we'll have our member meetings on Friday and Saturday mornings. Stay tuned for more details.

Alliance Member Development and Fundraising Update

Bill Good received a tentative commitment from prospective member Scott Siegal of Jamsco/Maggio Roofing, Takoma, Md., earlier this month. Since June 1, 2017, four new members have joined the Alliance, increasing revenues by $200,000 (our goal is $500,000), and total membership stands at 165, including 115 contractors; 37 associates; five service providers; six individuals; and two supporting members.

2018 International Roofing Expo — New Orleans

In summary, we'd like to encourage you to support the Alliance at the upcoming IRE in New Orleans: As we close, we want to share some sad news. Madelynn B. Miles — "Sam" as many of us knew her — wife of Dudley Miles and mother of Sherri Miles-Foley (both Alliance members) passed away Jan. 1. Up until the last few years, Sam was a familiar face at NRCA and Alliance events. It only took a few minutes of conversation to get to know Sam. Her warm smile, genuine interest and gentle mannerism made everyone feel as though they had known her for years. Our condolences go out to Dudley and Sherri.

Feel free to contact either of us or Bennett Judson if you have questions or comments regarding any of this information. We look forward to seeing you in New Orleans!

Thank you!
